Clearogen calls itself the “first natural acne treatment to address the underlying cause of adult and teenage acne instead of just treating the symptoms.” They focus on the idea that a hormone known as DHT is ultimately responsible for excess oil production and therefore acne. They pull consumers in by claiming to combine natural and prescription grade ingredients, as well as a 3 part solution including a cleanser, a toner, and a lotion.

Clearogen is actually not the first to claim to attack acne at the source. The only difference is most companies with those claims are smart enough to take a different approach to acne, generally providing oral treatments. The Clearogen formula is one you can generally find in a plethora of products in most grocery stores. It is based off of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, and there is nothing to suggest that it will specifically target DHT. The difference between Clearogen and a grocery store brand is the price. Clearogen sells for $69, which is vastly overpriced.
